Ever since 99 Hanover Street closed its doors for renovation earlier this year, we have waited with bated breath to hear what the future held for the legendary venue, sneaking a peak inside every time we walked past.
Kudos to the team for maintained the mystery, but we can now confirm the much-anticipated Superico Bar & Lounge is now open, complete with a fully-renovated interior, cocktail menu from an award-winning bar team, and a giant Japanese paper supermoon!
Superico (roughly translates to 'super-tasty') offers a full-spectrum food and drink experience across two venues on Hanover Street - Superico Bar & Lounge at 99 Hanover Street and Superico Restaurant at 83 Hanover Street - each complimenting one another with a shared ethos of attentive service and a relaxed yet upbeat atmosphere.
The drinks list has been developed by Superico’s award-winning team: general manager Michael Lynch and his team Johanna Cole and Claudio Poggi.
A highlight is the Padron Martini, served straight from the freezer giving it a rich, velvety texture that can only be achieved by serving it ice-cold.
The Green Apple Collins is an approachable twist on a classic Collins with added depth from a house green apple cordial and a kummel caraway liqueur from Mothership Scotland.
Another signature cocktail, the clarified Five Star Milk Punch, is made in one batch by filtering coconut yoghurt through a coffee filter with Star of Bombay gin, Martini Rubino, Amaro Montenegro, raspberry, milk and lime leaving the drink a clear pinky-red colour with a rich, creamy texture.
A food menu is under construction and will be available soon. Expect a selection of sharing-style plates of big, bold flavours - similar to those from Superico Restaurant – with a focus on the best Scottish produce enhanced using South American flavours.
The reimagining of Edinburgh institution 99 Hanover Street, run by Juan José Castillo Castro for the last 4 years, is part of a long-term plan to expand the Superico brand to more sites.
Juan commented: “We were due to open in late March, but obviously plans changed due to Covid-19. As a result we’ve had more time to develop our offering and capture the positive energy of our South American heritage. Despite having to operate slightly differently upon opening, with socially-distanced tables and table service only, we see it as a wonderful opportunity to get to know our guests better, and be able to give them a true Superico welcome and service.”
Following significant investment, Superico Bar & Lounge boasts one of the best sound and visual experiences in the UK. A live events schedule - SUPERICO SOUND SYSTEM – will launch when Government guidelines allow. Four magnificent Void speakers allow sound to be heard with crystal clear clarity throughout the space. Whilst the custom-built DJ booth houses a bespoke state-of-the-art MasterSounds system that awaits sets from local and international DJs.
The interior is the work of Jaco Justice of Edinburgh-based Studio Ja!Coco! and makes reference to South American symbolism and geography with a palette of earthy yet contemporary pinks and ochres. Whilst a breath-taking 2-metre diameter Japanese paper supermoon by Italian product-design veteran Davide Groppi glows from the centre of the room.
